The Trijicon RMR is the most widely adopted full-size pistol red-dot footprint in the world. Its two-screw, two-recoil-lug pattern has become a de facto standard, which means an enormous range of optics and optics-ready slides are cut for it — and adapter plates exist for nearly every other pistol.
If you own an optics-ready handgun, there is a very good chance it is cut for the RMR footprint or ships with an RMR plate.
The Trijicon RMR footprint at a glance
- Mounting pattern
- Two rear mounting screws with two forward recoil lugs (posts)
- Recoil location
- Two forward recoil lugs — the defining RMR feature
- Optics on this footprint
- 6 listed below
The RMR footprint technically specifies two forward recoil bosses (lugs), but many slide and plate manufacturers deliberately omit the matching recoil-boss pockets so a single cut can accept optics both with and without them. This broadens compatibility, but it means some RMR-pattern optics rely on their mounting screws and rear ledge for support rather than the recoil lugs. If you want that extra recoil support, confirm your slide is actually milled with the recoil pockets.
